There's a reason the Exuma Islands have long been a hideaway of celebrities and royalty. The archipelago offers visitors the ultimate escape into the splendor of the Bahamas.
Beginning 35 miles south of Nassau, the Exumas are a chain of narrow cays extending 130 miles south into sapphire-blue waters. Our Exuma Archipelago Adventure takes you not just to Great Exuma and Little Exuma (the two largest islands of the Exumas) but gives you a sampling of the 363 other cays that make up one of the world's most scenic marine habitats.
It's not only the rich and famous who have found the beauty of the Exumas enticing. The islands have also played a starring role in several films, including the James Bond thriller Thunderball
and the Pirates of the Caribbean.
The pirate connection is no exaggeration. The Exumas provided hideouts for many outlaws of the sea, including Captain Kidd. The first permanent European settlements were established by English loyalists after the American Revolution. Many of them brought the cotton plantation economy and slavery to the islands. They founded the largest town of the Exumas, George Town, in honor of King George III.
More recently, Norman's Cay gained notoriety as the headquarters for Carlos Lehder's drug-smuggling operation from 1978 to around 1982. The wreck of one of his airplanes even serves as a snorkeling site. Fortunately, the private islands of today's Exumas tend to belong to A-list celebrities, such as Johnny Depp, Tyler Perry, Faith Hill and Tim McGraw, David Copperfield, John Travolta, Richard Branson, Eddie Murphy, Nicholas Cage, and more. Meanwhile, Big Major Cay has become home to another set of famous residents. Since the early 1990s, a colony of pigs has grown up on the island and learned to swim. They often swim out to greet boats in hopes of a treat.
Swimming pigs and movie starts can hardly detract from the natural wonders of the Exumas. Perhaps most spectacular is the "Mile-long Sandbar" -- a ribbon of gleaming white sand that magically emerges from the turquoise water at low tide. Vital to the ecosystem is the Moria Harbour Cay National Park, which covers 13,440 acres of sand dunes, beaches, mangroves, and beds of seagrass.
Regardless of the spot that catches your fancy, our crew is ready to help you enjoy your favorites water activities. If snorkeling is your passion, we have the gear and guides available, along with an underwater camera. For deep-sea fishing, there are two rods aboard. Bonefish, known locally as the "grey ghost", is abundant in the Exumas and a favorite among anglers. There are also kayaks, stand-up paddle boards, and wakeboards.
Make sure you leave plenty of time for unhurried island-hopping and private beach parties. Each evening offers a protected anchorage at a new location, and another opportunity to enjoy a sundowner and the fresh catch of the day.
Although we're happy to provide a suggested itinerary, the decision belongs to you. We invite you to learn more about the many attractions of the Exuma Islands
. Set the course and we'll do the rest.
When you book your tour with us, you can be assured that you are reserving directly with the operator of your excursion, not with a distant reseller. You'll receive the personalized attention that comes naturally from a two-person crew with many years of experience on the water.
Likewise, our Lagoon 560 catamarans were built with luxury in mind, with well-appointed cabins, private bathrooms, showers, ample seating, panoramic windows, and first-rate entertainment systems. (Separate quarters for the crew members are located in the forepeaks of the boat.) You and your guests have easy access to the water from two step-off platforms built into the stern of the boat. A dinghy with an outboard motor is available for shore excursions. There is also a deck shower and BBQ.
We are fortunate to have a seasoned chef aboard who specializes in international cuisine. You can look forward to meals that are not only delicious, but presented with a natural beauty and elegance to match your surroundings. Snacks, featuring local fresh fruit, are always available for our guests, as well as a full range of beverages. We're also happy to customize menus for vegetarian and gluten-free meals, and accommodate other special requests.
